COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry graduate program at UNB offers a wide range of advanced courses designed to develop students' expertise in both theoretical and applied chemistry. Students are required to participate in a series of Graduate Seminars (CHEM6010, 6020, 6030), presenting topics unrelated to their thesis work and engaging with current research. Scientific writing and communication are emphasized in CHEM6011, preparing students for publication and peer review. Advanced coursework includes Quantum Chemistry II (CHEM6013), which delves into electronic structure methods and quantum theory, and Advanced Quantum Chemistry (CHEM6713), covering group theory and computational chemistry. Students may also pursue Independent Studies (CHEM6063, 6073) in specialized areas under faculty supervision. The curriculum includes instrumental analysis (CHEM6122), inorganic chemistry (CHEM6222), and various organic chemistry topics such as synthetic methods (CHEM6402), supramolecular chemistry (CHEM6403), asymmetric synthesis (CHEM6404), stereoelectronic effects (CHEM6405), molecular modeling (CHEM6406), and NMR-based structure determination (CHEM6407). Materials chemistry is addressed through courses on organic materials (CHEM6401) and a hands-on introduction to materials chemistry (CHEM6663), which includes techniques like solid-state synthesis and X-ray crystallography. Physical chemistry (CHEM6622) also forms part of the program. The program culminates in a Master’s thesis (CHEM6997), for which students must register every term. Overall, the program offers a balanced approach that integrates research, technical skills, and theoretical knowledge to prepare graduates for careers in academia, industry, and beyond.
