COURSE CURRICULUM

UNB’s graduate-level Biology courses provide students with rigorous training in scientific research, communication, and field-specific knowledge. BIOL 6000 is a required seminar course for MSc and PhD students, where students attend and engage with weekly seminars by researchers in marine biology, general biology, and related fields. MSc students must participate for up to four terms, and PhD students for six terms, including delivering their own research seminar. BIOL 6003 focuses on developing oral presentation skills, with students presenting their research progress and receiving constructive feedback. In BIOL 6103, PhD students are required to present two seminars, one of which must not relate directly to their thesis. BIOL 6149 allows students to pursue directed studies in a specialized area. BIOL 6393 examines food web ecology across ecosystems, utilizing tools such as stable isotope analysis and fatty acid profiling, and includes a graduate-level term paper. BIOL 6463 is a workshop-based course that emphasizes writing scientific journal papers, requiring students to have sufficient data for drafting and peer feedback. BIOL 6523 covers methods in phylogenetics, including evolutionary tree construction and data analysis, and involves lab work for practical experience. BIOL 6997 is the MSc thesis course, where students complete and defend original research under faculty supervision.
