COURSE CURRICULUM

UNB’s graduate-level Anthropology program offers a wide range of advanced courses that explore human culture, biology, and society through multiple subfields. ANTH6001, the Anthropology Honours Seminar, focuses on the research process through independent projects, professional development, and experiential learning. Courses like ANTH6111 (Resource Extraction, Conflict, and Resistance) and ANTH6113 (Environment, Infrastructure, and Design) investigate human interactions with natural resources and built environments using environmental anthropology frameworks. ANTH6313 (Archaeology, Heritage, and the Publics) examines how knowledge of the past is created and contested through heritage and archaeological practices. Field-based learning is a key part of the program, highlighted in courses like ANTH6352 (Downeast Archaeology Field School) and ANTH6552 (Bioarchaeological Field School), which teach excavation, recording, and analysis techniques with a strong emphasis on ethics and safety. Medical and biological anthropology are addressed in courses like ANTH6502 (Issues in Medical Anthropology), ANTH6524 (Paleopathology), and ANTH6526 (Anthropology of Death), which study human health, disease, and cultural responses to death across time and cultures. ANTH6702 (Gender and Health) explores how cultural constructions of gender impact health, healthcare access, and policy from a global perspective. All graduate courses include more rigorous readings, assignments, and presentations than their undergraduate equivalents.
