COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mechanical Engineering program at the University of New Brunswick is a comprehensive Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BScE) degree designed to be completed over eight academic terms, though students may extend the timeline if needed. The curriculum combines core courses in applied mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, materials science, manufacturing engineering, system dynamics, and engineering design, totaling 145 credit hours. In addition to core subjects, students must complete 9 credit hours of complementary studies electives and 9 credit hours of technical electives, bringing the total degree requirement to 163 credit hours. First-year foundational courses include general chemistry, programming, electricity and magnetism, mechanics, and calculus. Core mechanical engineering subjects build progressively from dynamics, mechanics of materials, machine design, thermodynamics, and fluid systems to advanced topics such as sustainable energy systems, manufacturing engineering, and vibration and control systems. Practical experience is integrated through design projects and laboratory courses, culminating in a capstone design course (ME 4860 or multidisciplinary alternatives like ENGG 4000 or TME 4025) available to students who have completed at least 110 credit hours and specific prerequisites. Students must achieve a minimum grade of C in all courses, and strict adherence to pre- and co-requisites is enforced by the department. Technical electives must include at least 6 credit hours from mechanical engineering-specific courses and typically come from offerings at the 3000 level or above. Additional flexibility allows students to select from approved technical courses outside the department based on their interests. For hands-on learning and practical exposure, the program includes access to a machine shop and encourages project-based coursework throughout.
