COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Chemical Engineering at UNB requires a minimum of 163 credit hours, including 12 credit hours of technical electives and 12 credit hours of complementary studies electives. The program is designed to be completed in eight terms (four years), but students participating in the Co-operative Education (Co-op) program typically take five years to finish due to work terms. Flexibility in course selection is allowed, but students are advised to consult with academic advisors to avoid scheduling conflicts, especially if deviating from the standard program guide. Core courses cover fundamental chemical engineering principles, including mass and energy balances, thermodynamics, transport phenomena, chemical process design, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, reaction engineering, and process control. Supporting courses include general and organic chemistry, physics, computer programming, electrical engineering basics, engineering communications, and mathematics such as calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. A capstone senior design project integrates knowledge from multiple courses and is a requirement for graduation.Students must complete 12 credit hours of technical electives, often 5000-level courses offered on a rotating basis. These electives allow specialization in areas such as Energy Conversion Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Nuclear Engineering, with successful completion noted on the transcript. Elective topics range from oil refining, polymer engineering, air pollution control, bioseparations, nanotechnology, electrochemical engineering, nuclear chemical processes, to pulp and papermaking. Additional electives from biology and civil engineering are also available. The program combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills through laboratory courses, co-op placements, and design projects to prepare students for professional careers in chemical engineering.
