COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry program at UNB offers five degree options: Major, Medicinal Chemistry Major, Honours, Medicinal Chemistry Honours, and Chemistry Co-op, all accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry. Honours and Co-op programs are recommended for students pursuing graduate studies or careers in chemistry, while the Medicinal Chemistry Honours program targets those interested in health professions or the pharmaceutical industry. Honours programs can be completed by thesis or by course, and a Minor in Chemistry is available for students in other departments, requiring at least 24 credit hours of approved courses. First-year students take foundational courses including general chemistry, math, physics, biology, and science electives. In second year, Major students take core chemistry and math courses along with electives, while third and fourth years include advanced chemistry, biology, and laboratory courses plus electives. Admission to Honours requires a minimum 3.0 CGPA after first year, which must be maintained; students must notify the director of their intent to pursue Honours. The Honours by Thesis option includes a research project course and a mix of advanced lecture and lab courses, while Honours by Course requires additional lecture and lab courses without a thesis. WHMIS certification is required for all laboratory courses, and some advanced courses require specific math prerequisites. A minimum of 12 credit hours of electives must be taken from the Faculty of Arts for all programs, ensuring a well-rounded education.
