COURSE CURRICULUM

International Development Studies (IDS) at the University of New Brunswick is a globally focused arts program designed to prepare students for careers in a rapidly changing world. With three academic pathways—minor, double major, and joint honours—IDS offers flexibility and broad interdisciplinary engagement. The program is rooted in understanding complex global issues such as poverty, sustainability, indigenous rights, and the North-South divide, combining coursework from six departments: anthropology, culture and media studies, economics, history, political science, and sociology. Students interested in the program are encouraged to begin with IDS 1103: Concepts and Perspectives, offered every fall. A minor in IDS is open to students in any discipline, including business, science, engineering, and leadership studies, and requires completion of eight courses, including two core IDS classes. This option adds a global perspective and helps students connect their primary field of study with the broader cultural, social, and economic dimensions of development. For those seeking more in-depth study, the double major and joint honours options—available only at UNB within New Brunswick—allow students in the Faculty of Arts to integrate IDS with a second discipline, deepening both subject knowledge and analytical skills.
