ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of New Brunswick (UNB), founded in 1785 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, is the oldest English-language university in Canada and one of the oldest public universities in North America. It was established by seven Loyalists who sought to create a liberal arts institution for their children after the American Revolution. Originally called the Academy of Liberal Arts and Sciences, it evolved through various charters to become UNB in 1859, becoming non-sectarian. The university expanded in 1964 with a second campus in Saint John and also has satellite health sciences campuses in Moncton and Bathurst. It offers over 75 degrees across 14 faculties and had around 9,725 students enrolled during 2021–2022. UNB has produced notable alumni including Canadian cabinet ministers, premiers, Supreme Court justices, and Confederation Poets like Bliss Carman and Charles G.D. Roberts. The university implemented a bicameral governance model in 1906 and restructured it in 1968 to include greater faculty representation. It was an early leader in forestry education and played a key role in staffing Canada’s Dominion Forests. UNB's Faculty of Law was relocated from Saint John to Fredericton in 1959, and the university gained recognition for entrepreneurship in 2014.
