COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Art (MFA) program at the University of Manitoba offers a comprehensive and structured curriculum designed to support students’ artistic development and critical inquiry. In the first year, students begin with essential foundational courses such as Research Integrity Tutorial and Academic Integrity Tutorial, which ensure a strong ethical framework. Studio practice is emphasized through Studio Concentration 1 and 2, alongside Graduate Seminar 1 and 2, providing opportunities for hands-on creation and scholarly discussion. In the second year, students continue advancing their practice in Studio Concentration 3 and 4, with further engagement in Graduate Seminar 3, culminating in the MFA Thesis/Studio Exhibition where students publicly present their work. The program also offers elective courses that allow students to deepen their understanding of contemporary art, including Themes in Contemporary Art Studio, Contemporary Art Theory, and Special Topics in Fine Art. These electives encourage critical reflection and exploration of current artistic trends and theoretical frameworks. Together, these courses create a balanced blend of studio work, research, and critical discourse, supporting students in developing a unique artistic voice and professional portfolio.
