COURSE CURRICULUM

The City Planning (MCP) program offers a diverse range of courses designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed for effective urban and regional planning. Core courses include CITY 7020: Planning Research Methods, which introduces essential research techniques for planning projects, and CITY 7070: Housing and Urban Revitalization, focusing on strategies to improve urban living conditions. Technical skills are developed through courses like ARCG 7080: GIS for Planners, where students learn geographic information systems essential for spatial analysis. Governance and legal aspects are covered in CITY 7310: Law and Local Governance, providing insight into the regulatory framework affecting planning decisions. Urban growth and sustainability are addressed in CITY 7340: Urban Development and CITY 7460: Urban Ecology and Environmental Management. The program emphasizes practical design skills through a sequence of studio courses: CITY 7410: Planning Design 1—Neighbourhood Scale, CITY 7420: Planning Design 2—City/Region Scale, CITY 7430: Planning Design 3—Urban Design, and CITY 7440: Planning Design 4—Indigenous, each focusing on different scales and contexts of planning. Students also prepare for professional practice in CITY 7470: Professional Planning Practice.
