COURSE CURRICULUM

The Linguistics MA program offers a variety of courses designed to deepen students’ understanding of language structure, function, and use. Course offerings include LING 7510: Linguistic Typology, which explores the classification and comparison of languages based on their structural features. LING 7550: Phonology focuses on the sound systems of languages and how they are organized. Semantic Theory (LING 7570) examines the meaning of words and sentences and how meaning is constructed in language. Syntax (LING 7630) studies sentence structure and the rules governing the arrangement of words.Field Methods (LING 7650) provides practical training in data collection and analysis, often involving work with under-documented languages. Sociolinguistics (LING 7680) investigates the relationship between language and society, exploring how language varies and changes in social contexts. The program also offers courses such as Special Problems in Linguistic Research (LING 7920), allowing students to focus on specific topics or challenges in linguistics, and Graduate Reading and Research 1 (LING 7940), which supports independent study and research under faculty supervision. Together, these courses equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for advanced research and professional applications in linguistics.
