COURSE CURRICULUM

Master of Arts students in the Disability Studies program are required to complete a structured curriculum designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of disability from social, cultural, and political perspectives. Students must complete 15 credit hours of core Disability courses that focus on key theories, frameworks, and issues central to the field. These core courses build a strong foundation for analyzing disability beyond the medical model, emphasizing social determinants and inclusive approaches. In addition to the core requirements, students are required to take an external research methods course worth 3 credit hours. This course equips students with essential skills for conducting rigorous research in the arts and social sciences, enabling them to engage with qualitative and quantitative methodologies relevant to Disability Studies. Furthermore, students must complete 6 credit hours of elective courses at the 4000 level or higher, selected from arts and social sciences disciplines. These electives allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests within the broader context of disability, such as sociology, psychology, education, or cultural studies. This combination of core, research methods, and elective courses ensures that students receive both depth and breadth in their academic training, preparing them for advanced scholarship, advocacy, and professional work in Disability Studies and related fields.
