COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Jazz Studies program offers a diverse range of courses designed to develop students’ skills in performance, theory, history, and composition. Core courses such as MUSC 1004: Introduction to Music in History 1 provide a broad foundation in music history, while specialized courses like MUSC 2072: Jazz History 1 focus specifically on the evolution of jazz as a genre. Practical ensemble experience is gained through MUSC 1182: Jazz Ensemble 1 and MUSC 3180: Ensemble, where students collaborate with peers in live performance settings. Jazz theory and composition are emphasized in MUSC 2112: Jazz Theory 1 and MUSC 3112: Jazz Composition and Arranging 1, equipping students with the tools to create and arrange music. Improvisation, a cornerstone of jazz, is developed through courses such as MUSC 4192: Jazz Improvisation 3. The program also includes studies of broader musical traditions with classes like MUSC 3084: Romantic Music History and MUSC 4140: History of Canadian Music, enriching students’ contextual understanding.
