COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS) program offers a diverse range of courses that allow students to explore the rich and complex cultures of Europe from late antiquity through the Renaissance and into the early modern era. Sample courses span multiple disciplines and include CLAS 1280: Introduction to Ancient Roman Culture, which provides foundational context for the transition to the medieval world, and FAAH 2070: Renaissance to Baroque Art and Architecture, which examines visual culture during pivotal periods of artistic innovation. LATN 2800: Readings in Medieval or Renaissance Latin allows students to engage directly with texts in their original language, while ENGL 3010: Shakespeare delves into the literary genius of early modern England. RLGN 3194: Islamic Philosophy introduces students to philosophical thought within the broader medieval world, expanding perspectives beyond Europe. Additional offerings include CLAS 3270: The World of Late Antiquity: History and Archeology, ICEL 3320: Old Norse Mythology, SPAN 3670: Poetry and Novel of the Golden Age, and HIST 4050: England in the Long Eighteenth Century. Together, these courses provide a rich interdisciplinary experience, allowing students to gain critical insights into the political, intellectual, artistic, and religious developments of the medieval and early modern worlds.
