COURSE CURRICULUM

The Linguistics program offers a diverse range of courses that explore the many facets of human language. Students can study multilingualism and how multiple languages coexist and interact in individuals and societies through courses like LING 2202: Multilingualism. LING 2250: Language and the Media examines how language is used in various media platforms and its impact on communication. LING 2360 focuses on the rich diversity of languages spoken in Canada, while LING 2500 delves into semantics and pragmatics, the study of meaning in language and how context shapes understanding. Verbal art, such as storytelling and poetry, is explored in LING 2600. The program also addresses communication disorders with LING 2800, providing insight into speech and language impairments. Sociolinguistics, covered in LING 3210, looks at how language varies and changes in social contexts. LING 3880 focuses on how people learn a second language, while ASLL 1000 introduces students to American Sign Language, highlighting the importance of signed languages. These courses collectively equip students with a broad understanding of language’s role in society, cognition, and communication, preparing them for careers in education, therapy, translation, and research.
