COURSE CURRICULUM

The Classics program offers a diverse range of courses that provide students with a comprehensive understanding of ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Students begin with foundational language courses such as LATN 1080: Introduction to the Reading of Latin 1, which develops their ability to read and interpret Latin texts. Cultural exploration is emphasized through courses like CLAS 1280: Introduction to Ancient Roman Culture, where students gain insight into the daily life, politics, and social customs of Rome. Mythology, a vital part of classical studies, is covered in CLAS 1520: Greek and Roman Mythology, allowing students to explore the rich stories and beliefs that shaped ancient societies. The program also integrates modern perspectives with courses such as CLAS 2180: Ancient Greece and Rome through Film, which examines how classical antiquity is portrayed in contemporary media. Further linguistic study is offered in CLAS 2710: Greek and Latin Elements in English and LATN 2780: History of the Latin Language, deepening students’ understanding of language development. Specialized topics include CLAS 3260: Hellenistic Civilization: History and Archaeology and CLAS 3264: Pompeii and Herculaneum, which delve into significant historical events and archaeological discoveries. Finally, GRK 3750: Homer focuses on the epic poetry that remains foundational to Western literature.
