COURSE CURRICULUM

The graduate Mathematics program offers advanced coursework in core areas of pure mathematics, particularly algebra, number theory, and analysis, at both the master’s and doctoral levels. At the MSc level, students typically take Mathematics 5405 (Algebra) and Mathematics 5505 (Analysis) as foundational courses, along with an additional graduate course such as Mathematics 5460 (Advanced Number Theory), depending on their academic interests and program requirements. Algebra courses cover topics such as group theory, ring theory, modules, and both commutative and non-commutative algebraic structures. Number theory courses focus on analytic and algebraic approaches, including advanced topics such as elliptic curves and modular forms. Analysis courses explore measure theory, Banach spaces, Lp spaces, Fourier analysis, and complex analysis, providing a strong theoretical foundation for advanced mathematical research. At the PhD level, equivalent courses—Mathematics 7405, 7460, and 7505—extend these topics at a more advanced and rigorous level, requiring admission to the doctoral program. All courses are designed as three-credit graduate-level offerings with a lecture format emphasizing deep theoretical understanding and problem-solving skills. These courses form the academic foundation for research-based degrees, supporting students in developing the analytical and abstract reasoning skills required for thesis work and advanced mathematical inquiry in pure and applied mathematics.
