COURSE CURRICULUM

The MFA in New Media program follows a two-year structure that combines coursework in the first year with intensive thesis research and production in the second year. During the first year, students complete a set of required graduate-level courses designed to build both theoretical understanding and practical studio skills in digital media and design. These include Fine Arts 5020, which focuses on information literacy in the fine arts, New Media 5148 (Graduate Studio I) and New Media 5149 (Graduate Studio II), which develop advanced studio practice in digital media, and New Media 5151, which explores new media theory and history. In addition to these core courses, students are required to complete two elective courses at the 5000 level, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests within the field. In the second year of the program, students shift their focus primarily to the development of their MFA thesis, which involves significant independent research and creative production under faculty supervision. The thesis represents the culmination of the program and must be successfully defended in a final oral examination. Overall, the program integrates structured coursework with independent creative research, preparing students for advanced professional practice and academic work in new media, digital art, and design-related fields.
