COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Theatre and Dramatic Arts at the University of Lethbridge is a structured two-year program that combines intensive coursework with independent thesis research and production. In the first year, students complete required academic and studio-based courses designed to strengthen both practical and theoretical understanding of theatre. Core courses include Drama 5148 Graduate Studio I and Drama 5149 Graduate Studio II, each providing advanced training in performance, design, and production practices within a professional studio environment. Students also complete Fine Arts 5020 Information Literacy for the Fine Arts, which develops essential research, academic writing, and information literacy skills for graduate-level study. In addition, students choose one course from either Drama 5150 Graduate Theatre Studies (Series) or Drama 5211 Graduate Seminar in Theories of Theatre, allowing for deeper engagement with theatre scholarship, critical analysis, and theoretical frameworks. Two additional 5000-level elective courses are also required, enabling students to tailor their studies to specific interests in theatre and related disciplines. In the second year, the focus shifts primarily to thesis research and production under faculty supervision, culminating in a major creative and scholarly project. Overall, the program integrates rigorous academic study with professional artistic practice.
