COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Art at the University of Lethbridge follows a structured two-year program of study that combines coursework, studio practice, and independent research. In the first year, students complete required coursework designed to develop both practical studio skills and theoretical understanding of contemporary art practice. Core courses include Art 5148 Graduate Studio I and Art 5149 Graduate Studio II, each emphasizing advanced studio development and artistic exploration. Students also take Art 5160 Theory in Art Studio, which integrates critical and conceptual frameworks into studio work, and Fine Arts 5020 Information Literacy for the Fine Arts, which develops essential research and academic skills for graduate-level study. In addition, students complete two 5000-level elective courses, with at least one chosen from Art, Art History, or Museum Studies, allowing for academic specialization and interdisciplinary engagement. In the second year, the program shifts focus toward independent thesis research and creative production under faculty supervision. The MFA thesis culminates in a final exhibition and is formally defended in a final oral examination. Overall, the program is designed to support rigorous artistic development, critical inquiry, and professional preparation for careers in contemporary art and related fields.
