COURSE CURRICULUM

MA in Music program at the University of Lethbridge, students complete 18 approved course credits, typically consisting of six one-term courses. Up to nine of these credits may be taken outside the Music Department, allowing for interdisciplinary exploration relevant to the student’s research interests. While not mandatory, proficiency in a second language is strongly encouraged if it supports the research focus. By the end of the first year, students are expected to complete and submit a formal thesis proposal. In the second year, the emphasis shifts to intensive independent research, guided closely by a primary supervisor and thesis committee. This phase involves developing, writing, and defending a thesis that demonstrates original, in-depth research on a topic related to music. The department offers strong mentorship and scholarly support across a wide range of music-related fields. Faculty expertise spans musicology, music theory, ethnomusicology, and digital audio arts, ensuring students can pursue specialized research within diverse methodological and theoretical frameworks.
