COURSE CURRICULUM

The Therapeutic Recreation program offers a structured series of courses designed to prepare students for professional practice as certified therapeutic recreation specialists. The curriculum begins with foundational courses such as Practical Application of Therapeutic Recreation Theories and Models, which introduces the history, principles, and core frameworks of the profession. Students then progress to Advanced Program Planning, where they learn to design, implement, and evaluate recreation-based programs with an emphasis on leisure education and client outcomes. Courses like Inclusive Recreation and Leisure provide a Canadian perspective on accessibility, identity, and the role of leisure in promoting social inclusion. Skill development is strengthened through Advanced Assessment and Documentation, Communication and Counselling Techniques, and Therapeutic Recreation for Diverse Populations, all of which focus on client-centered care and effective interaction with individuals with varied needs. Upper-level courses explore administration, leadership, evidence-based practice, and current issues and trends in the field, helping students understand both clinical and organizational aspects of therapeutic recreation. Modalities and intervention courses teach practical facilitation techniques used in real-world therapeutic settings. Research Literacy ensures students can apply evidence-based approaches in professional practice. A major component of the program is the extensive internship, where students work under a certified professional in a healthcare or community setting, gaining hands-on experience.
