COURSE CURRICULUM

Indigenous Health program provide a structured pathway from foundational public health knowledge to advanced, hands-on community experience. Students typically begin with PUBH 1000: Introduction to Public Health, which introduces the core principles of population health, health promotion, disease prevention, and the social determinants of health. This course helps students understand how health systems function and how public policy influences wellbeing at a community level. INHL 3300: Traditional Indigenous Health Concepts explores Indigenous approaches to health and healing, emphasizing traditional knowledge, cultural practices, land-based wellness, and the role of Elders and Knowledge Keepers in maintaining community health. INHL 3310: Contemporary Issues in Indigenous Health focuses on current challenges affecting Indigenous communities, such as mental health, addiction, housing insecurity, chronic disease, and the ongoing impacts of colonization and systemic inequality. Finally, INHL 4350: Practicum in Indigenous Health provides an extensive experiential learning opportunity where students apply their knowledge in real-world settings within Indigenous or public health organizations. This practicum allows students to engage directly with communities, develop professional skills, and contribute to meaningful health initiatives. Together, these courses combine theory, cultural learning, and applied practice to prepare students for impactful careers in Indigenous health, public health, and community wellbeing services.
