COURSE CURRICULUM

Indigenous Art (Art Studio) program are designed to build both technical studio skills and critical understanding of Indigenous art, land-based knowledge, and contemporary artistic practice. Students may take Art courses that include drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation art, performance-based work, digital media, and experimental or interdisciplinary studio practices. These courses focus on developing personal artistic voice, technical proficiency, and conceptual strength through hands-on creation and critique. Art History courses complement studio learning by exploring global and Indigenous art traditions, post-colonial theory, visual culture, and the historical development of artistic movements, helping students understand how art reflects identity, land, and cultural experience. Museum Studies courses provide practical experience in curation, exhibition planning, collection management, conservation basics, and working with gallery and museum environments, often involving the University’s art collection. Indigenous Studies courses deepen understanding of Indigenous worldviews, histories, governance, land relations, and cultural expression, grounding artistic practice in community and context. Together, these sample courses create a balanced curriculum where students not only produce artwork but also study its cultural meaning, ethical responsibilities, and institutional presentation, preparing them for careers as professional artists, curators, educators, or cultural workers in contemporary art and Indigenous cultural sectors.
