COURSE CURRICULUM

Women and Gender Studies at the University of Lethbridge is an interdisciplinary program that examines how gender, identity, power, and inequality shape social life across historical and contemporary contexts. It introduces students to feminist theories and intersectional approaches that analyze how factors such as race, class, sexuality, ability, and nationality interact with gender to structure lived experiences and social institutions. The program explores a wide range of themes, including women’s health, activism, representation in media and culture, global gender relations, and social justice movements. Core courses such as Introduction to Women and Gender Studies, Feminist Theoretical Frameworks, and Feminist Approaches to Research provide foundational knowledge in theory and methodology. Students then build on this foundation through specialized courses like Gender and Globalization, The Politics of Representation, Social Justice and the State, and Reproductive Justice, Health, and Histories, which examine real-world issues and policy debates. The program also emphasizes experiential learning through courses focused on activism, advocacy, and applied research, allowing students to connect theory with practice. Advanced seminars and a senior thesis option encourage independent research and critical engagement with contemporary gender issues.
