COURSE CURRICULUM

The Visual Arts diploma program requires students to complete 60 credits divided into three key areas: Visual Arts core, Materials and Methods, and Electives. The Visual Arts core consists of 21 credits, including foundational courses such as Ways of Seeing Art, Digital Media, and Visual Culture (SOCA 100), Ways of Writing About Art (SOCA 105), Introduction to Visual Studies (SOCA 201), Introduction to Visual Art (VA 100), Creating on a Theme (VA 110), Introduction to Drawing (VA 113), and Professional Skills for Visual Artists (VA 260). The Materials and Methods section requires 12 credits, featuring 200-level VA courses alongside options like Video Production Techniques I and II (FILM 260/261), Indigenous Art: Stories and Protocols (IPK 277), Digital Concept Art (MEDA 210), 3D Modeling and Animation I (MEDA 270), Game Engines I (MEDA 280), and Storytelling (THEA 250/ENGL 253). Students must also complete 27 credits of electives, including at least 6 credits in Visual Arts courses at the 100-level or higher, 6 credits in Creative Arts courses such as AH, ENGL (creative writing), FILM, GD, MEDA, MACS, or THEA, and 15 credits of general university-level courses in any discipline, including VA. This structure provides a flexible, interdisciplinary approach that encourages students to build a personalized curriculum tailored to their artistic interests and career goals.
