COURSE CURRICULUM

The Library and Information Technology program consists of 20 applied and academic courses totaling 60 credits, with students required to complete 18 core courses across all diploma options. These courses cover essential topics such as Introduction to Libraries, Resource Description and Access, Collection Services, Classification, Subject Cataloguing, Library Public Services, and Online Searching. Students also engage in workplace site visits, study Information and Society, explore Library Workplaces, and learn about Information Technology in Libraries. Additional courses include Media in Information Centres and a Practicum or Capstone Project to provide hands-on experience. To support technical skills, students complete courses in Computerized Business Applications and Management Information Systems, as well as Web Publishing. Furthermore, students select one elective course in Library and Information Technology and must complete two university-level courses with significant writing and Canadian content components. The writing-intensive course can be in English or Communication Studies, while the Canadian content course may cover history, geography, culture, politics, economics, law, criminology, or government, chosen in consultation with program advisors. This comprehensive curriculum equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for a successful career in diverse library and information centre settings, preparing them to meet the evolving needs of the information industry.
