COURSE CURRICULUM

The Liberal Arts diploma at UFV requires the completion of 60 university-level credits, with at least 30 credits completed at UFV. Of these, 33 credits must be in Arts subjects, including Social Sciences, Humanities, or Creative Arts, while 27 credits can be taken in any university-level discipline at the 100-level or above. Additionally, at least 24 credits must be at the 200-level or higher. Foundational skills form a key part of the program and include courses in writing, communication, critical thinking, quantitative literacy, and scientific literacy. Students must complete a writing foundation course such as CMNS 125 or ENGL 105 within their first 30 credits, alongside a course focusing on written, oral, or visual communication, chosen from a broad list of options including communication, languages, design, or the arts. Critical thinking, fulfilled by PHIL 100, and courses in quantitative literacy and scientific literacy are also mandatory, but students may not use the same course to meet more than one foundational skill requirement. These foundational courses emphasize developing skills like effective communication tailored to audience and purpose, constructing and evaluating arguments, interpreting quantitative data, and understanding scientific methods and ethics. Together, these components prepare students with a broad, interdisciplinary education, suitable for further academic study or diverse career paths.
