COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminal Justice diploma program at UFV requires the completion of 60 credits divided into core, breadth, and elective requirements, providing a comprehensive education in criminology and related fields. The 30-credit core includes foundational courses such as Introduction to Criminology, Criminal Justice System, Canadian Law, and specialized topics like Research Methods, Criminal Law, and Professional Practice, alongside two elective courses from areas like Policing, Corrections, or Comparative Criminal Justice Systems. The 21-credit breadth requirements broaden students’ perspectives with courses in professional communication or academic writing, economics, politics, psychology, sociology, Indigenous studies, philosophy, and public speaking or report writing, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of social contexts and critical thinking skills. Additionally, 9 credits of electives allow students to explore specialized topics such as Youth Crime, Indigenous Peoples and Crime, Restorative Justice, or Psychopathy, alongside non-criminal justice courses and 200-level credits in any discipline to encourage academic diversity. The program emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, preparing students for careers in various criminal justice fields while also supporting further academic pursuits. Students are advised to complete communication courses early to build essential writing and speaking abilities, and those with prior psychology credits may waive specific requirements.
