COURSE CURRICULUM

The Agriculture Technology diploma program at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) offers students a practical and flexible entry into the agricultural industry. In the first year, students complete either the Horticulture Crop Production and Protection certificate or the Livestock Production certificate. These programs provide foundational knowledge and skills in the chosen focus area and count fully toward the diploma requirements, allowing for a seamless transition into the second year. In year two, students expand their expertise by delving into topics such as sustainable and holistic agricultural practices, soil management, pest control, and on-farm food safety. Regardless of the stream chosen—horticulture or livestock—students receive well-rounded training that includes both science-based and business-focused instruction.The program is structured to combine theory with real-world application. Students sharpen their communication abilities through professional writing courses and strengthen their business acumen through microeconomics and marketing studies. A major highlight of the second year is the enterprise project, where students create a detailed business plan for a potential agricultural venture. This hands-on assignment helps connect academic learning with entrepreneurial thinking. Whether it's managing fruit and vegetable crops or raising livestock, the curriculum equips students to handle the daily challenges of running a modern farm or agricultural business.The diploma program concludes with a practicum, giving students the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience in the field. After two years of industry experience, diploma graduates can also apply to UFV’s Bachelor of Business Administration in Agriculture Management. This degree option prepares students for leadership roles by offering a deeper understanding of management principles specific to the agriculture sector.
