COURSE CURRICULUM

The Indigenous Studies certificate program consists of courses designed to be completed flexibly or over two full-time semesters. In Semester I, students take foundational courses such as Halq'eméylem Language I, Introduction to Indigenous Peoples Knowledges, Stó:lō Ways of Healing and Helping, Stó:lō History, and Introduction to Indigenous Resurgence, totaling 15 credits. These courses provide essential knowledge about Indigenous languages, healing practices, history, and resurgence efforts. Semester II continues with courses like Stó:lō and Salish Communications and Worldview, Indigenous Education: Contemporary Issues and Policies, Indigenous Art: Stories and Protocols, and Colonial Trauma, Residential Schools, and Resilience, totaling another 15 credits. Additionally, students choose one elective from a diverse range of subjects that deepen understanding of Indigenous cultures, governance, literature, and arts. Electives include Indigenous Art of the Northwest Coast, First Nations of British Columbia – Traditional Cultures, Aboriginal Peoples in B.C.: Contemporary Issues, Indigenous Literature, Storytelling, Indigenous Film, Canadian State and Indigenous Governance, and Indigenous Design and Technology. This program’s comprehensive curriculum fosters a well-rounded understanding of Indigenous histories, worldviews, and contemporary issues, preparing students to engage respectfully and knowledgeably with Indigenous communities and contribute to reconciliation and Indigenous empowerment.
