COURSE CURRICULUM
The University of the Fraser Valley’s four-year Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree with a Horticulture major is designed to equip students with a strong foundation in technical, communication, and business skills—essential for becoming a leader in the Fraser Valley’s dynamic agricultural industry. This program goes beyond traditional classroom learning by offering an applied, hands-on approach. Core horticultural topics such as nursery management, greenhouse operations, vegetable and fruit production, and plant science are explored through practical experiences. Most courses include laboratory components, practical greenhouse work, and field trips to give students direct exposure to the realities of agricultural work. Students also engage in lab-based learning in biology, chemistry, and physical geography, where they develop essential skills in handling laboratory equipment, scientific writing, and delivering presentations. Agriculture-specific courses emphasize practical techniques such as soil analysis, pest diagnosis and treatment, and greenhouse management from both theoretical and applied perspectives. The program structure includes a balanced mix of subject areas to ensure students graduate with a well-rounded education. General degree requirements include 13 credits in business, statistics, and communication to strengthen professional and analytical skills. Students also complete 21 to 22 credits in foundational science courses and at least 8 credits in electives that explore the societal role of agriculture. To fulfill the requirements for the Horticulture major, students complete 33 credits in lower-level agriculture courses and 21 credits in upper-level agrology, along with 14 to 20 credits in upper-level biology and/or physical geography. The program concludes with a 4- to 5-credit capstone course, allowing students to apply their knowledge to a real-world agricultural challenge. With its strong emphasis on applied learning and industry relevance, this degree prepares graduates to thrive in the horticulture sector and contribute meaningfully to the future of agriculture in the Fraser Valley.
