COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Regional and Community Planning (BRCP) at the University of the Fraser Valley requires the completion of 120 credits, including breadth requirements, a comprehensive planning core, and electives. Students complete four breadth courses (12–15 credits) in key areas such as communication, data analysis, environmental science, and Indigenous governance. The planning core consists of 22 courses (75–83 credits) covering essential topics like urban development, planning law, sustainability, regional policy, housing, and Indigenous land use. Courses include GEOG 360 (Introduction to Planning and Policy), PLAN 300 (Planning for Housing), PLAN 366 (Resiliency and Spatial Planning), and PLAN 410 (Indigenizing Planning). Students also complete courses in applied GIS, economics, urban settlements, and public policy processes. Planning-related special topics such as environmental assessment, sustainable transportation, and international development policy offer specialized learning. A workplace planning experience, such as an internship or practicum, is required (4–6 credits), providing hands-on, real-world engagement. Additionally, students take two courses (6–7 credits) focusing on leadership, creativity, and communication within professional settings. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, community engagement, and Indigenous perspectives, preparing students to work effectively in planning roles locally and globally, or to pursue graduate studies or professional certifications in the planning field.
