COURSE CURRICULUM

The Visual Arts program requires students to complete coursework across five key areas to develop a well-rounded artistic education. The Visual Arts core, totaling 52-53 credits, includes foundational courses such as History of Art and Culture in a Global Context, Art History and Its Methods, Introduction to Visual Art, Drawing, Professional Skills, Creative Research Methods, and a Senior Studio Project. Students also study critical theory and have options to explore Indigenous art, Canadian contact zones, race and place in creative contexts, and higher-level art history courses. In the Materials and Methods category, students complete 12 credits focusing on practical skills through 200-level studio courses and select from video production, digital concept art, 3D modeling, game engines, storytelling, or other advanced studio courses. The Advanced and Thematic Approaches section requires 9 credits of 300- or 400-level Visual Arts courses, including options in advanced video production and storytelling. The Art Practice in the World component involves 3-4 credits dedicated to real-world engagement through courses on exhibition issues, museum practices, internships, applied theatre, socially engaged art, or public art. Finally, students complete 9 credits in Creative Practice and Critical Studies breadth, ensuring both technical proficiency and critical understanding necessary for professional artistic development.
