COURSE CURRICULUM

The Graphic and Digital Design major requires students to strategically plan their course selections over multiple semesters, as some upper-level courses are offered only annually and build on skills developed sequentially. The program is divided into three curriculum areas: creative practice (54 credits), professional practice (24 credits), and theory, criticality, and context (18–20 credits). At the lower level, students complete 48 credits focusing mainly on creative practice, including courses such as Fundamentals of Design, Typography, Digital Design Media, Interactive Design, Illustration, and Applied Photography, alongside theory courses like History of Graphic Design and Essentials of Marketing. Electives from various disciplines further enrich their understanding of design in broader social and cultural contexts. At the upper level, 48 to 50 credits are required, with creative practice courses covering advanced topics like Brand Identity, Dynamic Media, and Interactive Design, while professional practice emphasizes portfolio development, digital project management, and capstone projects. Additionally, students complete practicums, co-op placements, or directed studies to gain real-world experience. Theory and criticality courses at this stage include User Experience Design and specialized design inquiry or community planning studios, ensuring graduates are well-rounded, skilled designers prepared to lead in diverse professional environments.
