COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing minor and extended minor at UFV requires a combination of lower-level, upper-level, and breadth courses totaling 34 credits. For lower-level requirements, students complete 18 credits including two ENGL courses outside creative writing—such as ENGL 253 or THEA 250—and four creative writing courses covering genres like screenwriting, playwriting, short fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction. At least one course from ENGL 201, 202, 223, or 253/THEA 250 is recommended, with the latter allowed to fulfill only one requirement. Upper-level requirements consist of 16 credits, including two advanced creative writing courses from options like advanced short fiction, historical fiction, novel, poetry, children’s literature, advanced non-fiction, screenwriting, and playwriting, plus a seminar in creative writing or a directed study focused on a creative project. Additionally, students take four credits of upper-level English courses outside of creative writing. The breadth requirements cover Canadian and global literature through courses such as Introduction to Literatures in Canada, Indigenous Literatures, South Asian Literature, and World Literature, contributing to the overall credit count for the extended minor. This well-rounded curriculum fosters creative skill development alongside a broad literary foundation, preparing students for diverse writing careers.
