COURSE CURRICULUM

UFV’s Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) – Natural Sciences program is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary degree designed to prepare students for environmental careers or graduate studies. The program includes a strong environmental core (23–29 credits) with courses such as environmental issues, watershed living, environmental assessment, and leadership, along with a practical work component through a practicum, co-op, or approved work experience. The research and methods core (24–26 credits) develops essential skills in communication, field and lab techniques, GIS, statistics, and critical thinking, alongside a professional and research skills elective. Breadth requirements (53–61 credits) ensure a well-rounded foundation with courses in biology, chemistry, geography, agriculture, economics, and humanities, including hands-on fieldwork and interdisciplinary perspectives. Students specialize further by selecting from thematic course lists focused on society and culture, political economy, environmental justice, Indigenous knowledge, environmental economics, sustainability, and advanced sciences such as ecology, soil science, and hydrology. Elective credits (7–24) allow for customization and ensure students reach the required 45 upper-level credits for graduation. With a blend of classroom, lab, and field learning, and a strong emphasis on practical experience, the BES (Natural Sciences) equips graduates with the tools to pursue environmental consulting, policy work, research, or professional accreditation such as P.Ag.
