COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology major requires 18 lower-level and 32 upper-level credits that together build a strong foundation in sociological theory, research methods, and practical application. At the lower level, students complete 18 credits, including SOC 101 (Introductory Sociology), SOC 201 (Key Ideas in Sociology), and SOC 255/MACS 255 (Introduction to Social Research), along with 9 additional credits in lower-level SOC courses that allow students to explore various topics such as social inequality, gender, race, and family. At the upper level, students complete 32 credits, beginning with two core research courses: SOC 355/MACS 355 (Quantitative Research Methods) and SOC 356/MACS 356 (Qualitative Research Methods), each worth 4 credits. These courses provide essential training in data analysis and fieldwork. Students also complete 24 additional upper-level SOC credits, with the flexibility to choose from a wide range of advanced topics in social theory, policy, institutions, and global issues. Up to 6 of these credits may come from internship courses (SOC 396/GDS 310/GEOG 396 and SOC 398/GDS 311/GEOG 398), offering valuable field experience. This combination of coursework equips students with analytical tools, methodological skills, and critical perspectives necessary for graduate studies or careers in research, policy, social services, education, or advocacy.
