COURSE CURRICULUM

The lower-level requirements for the Media and Communication Studies (MACS) program consist of 18 credits, including foundational courses such as MACS 110 Introduction to Communication Studies, MACS 130 Introduction to Digital Media and Communications, and MACS 255/SOC 255 Introduction to Social Research. Students must also complete an additional six credits of lower-level MACS courses, along with one more course chosen from options like CMNS 180 Introduction to Intercultural Communication, ENGL 208 Creative Writing: Screenwriting, or FILM 110 Introduction to Film Studies. For upper-level requirements, students need 15 to 16 credits, including eight credits of upper-level MACS courses and seven or eight credits from a diverse range of advanced courses. These include specialized topics such as Visual Anthropology, Arts in Context: Gender, Art, and Society, Multimedia Journalism, Public Relations Campaigns, and Communicating for Change. Other options include Communications Practicum, Media, Crime, and Criminal Justice, Advanced Screenwriting, Film Theory, Documentary Video Storytelling, and Gender and Gender Relations. This program structure provides students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills across communication, media production, and critical social perspectives, preparing graduates for varied roles in media, journalism, public relations, and related fields.
