COURSE CURRICULUM

The Latin American Studies minor at UFV requires students to complete 9 lower-level and 16 upper-level credits, offering a diverse range of courses that provide both foundational knowledge and advanced interdisciplinary study of Latin America. At the lower level, students select nine credits from courses including LAS 100 (Images of Latin America), LAS 161 (Aztecs, Mayas, and Spaniards), LAS 162 (¡Revolución! Politics, Protest, and Culture in Modern Latin American History), and language courses such as Spanish 101 through 281. Students must include at least three credits from LAS, GDS, or GEOG courses. Upper-level requirements consist of 16 credits, with at least four credits from LAS, GDS, or GEOG. Courses cover topics such as African slavery in the Americas, sexuality and gender, religion, inter-American relations, development and underdevelopment processes, and state terror and human rights. Other upper-level options include directed studies, internships, and advanced Spanish language and cultural courses. This program emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach, integrating anthropology, history, sociology, geography, and global development studies to give students a comprehensive understanding of Latin America’s cultural, political, and social complexities, preparing them for diverse academic and professional paths related to the region.
