COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography major requires 26–28 lower-level credits, beginning with foundational courses such as GEOG 160 (Settlements: Why We Live Where We Do), ENV 111 (Environmental Issues and Strategies), or GEOG 130 (Geography of Canada), along with ENV 212 (Environmental Field and Lab Techniques) or GEOG 103 (The Physical Environment), which is recommended for those pursuing Teacher Education. Students then select two additional courses from a diverse list including climate, landforms, biogeography, world regional geography, social geography, economic geography, and geographic information systems (GIS). Supporting courses such as GEOG 252 (Quantitative Methods), GEOG 256 (Knowledge and Ethics in Geographic and Environmental Research), and GEOG 257 (Environment: Science and Communications) build essential skills for geographic analysis. At the upper level, students complete 30–31 credits including one GIS course from options like GEOG 355 (GIS for Built Environment), GEOG 357 (Conservation GIS), GEOG 358 (Forensic GIS), or GEOG 359 (GIS Applications for Business), with a limit of two GIS courses counting towards requirements. Additionally, students choose 18 credits of 300- or 400-level Geography electives (excluding some discontinued courses), and 9 credits from advanced Geography, Environmental Studies, or Planning courses. This flexible structure prepares students with a broad and interdisciplinary understanding of physical and human geography, GIS skills, and environmental research techniques, equipping them for diverse careers or further study.
