COURSE CURRICULUM

For students entering UFV with no prior knowledge of French or those who have not studied French for over two years since completing French 11, the program begins with FREN 101 French Language I, a 3-credit course. Students with French 11, FREN 101 or equivalent, or who have department approval or assessment, may start with FREN 102 French Language II, also 3 credits. Those who have completed French 12 or FREN 102 and declare a major in French must fulfill additional course requirements alongside the general Bachelor of Arts requirements. The lower-level requirements, totaling 21 credits, include foundational courses such as LING 101 Introduction to Language, FREN 215 and FREN 216 Intermediate French I and II (or FREN 230 for immersion students), FREN 219 Intermediate French Composition, FREN 225 Francophone Language and Culture via Media, FREN 242 Intermediate French Oral Communication, and FREN 245 Cultures of the Francophone World. The upper-level requirements consist of 32 credits covering advanced topics including FREN 315 Introduction to Francophone Literature, FREN 319 Advanced French Composition, FREN 325 Phonetics and Pronunciation, FREN 342 Advanced French Oral Communication, and FREN 345 French and Quebecois Cinema since 1950. Additionally, students select three courses (12 credits) from specialized subjects like Francophone myths, translation, applied linguistics, and various special topics in French to deepen their knowledge and skills.
