COURSE CURRICULUM

The UFV Communication major requires a total of 49–54 credits and is structured to build both foundational and advanced communication skills that are essential for today’s professional environments. At the lower level, students complete 18 credits, including CMNS 180 (Intercultural Communication), CMNS 235 (Public Speaking), CMNS 251 (Professional Report Writing), MACS 110 (Introduction to Communication Studies), and two additional lower-level CMNS electives to broaden their understanding of communication across contexts. The upper-level component consists of 31–36 credits and includes core courses such as CMNS 316 (Communicating for Social Media), CMNS 320 (Editing Principles), and CMNS 390 (Designing User-Friendly Guides). Students also choose one research-focused course from options like CMNS 353, BUS 320, IPK 344, or SOC 355/356, providing exposure to either qualitative, quantitative, or Indigenous research methods. Additionally, students select one specialized writing course from CMNS 325, 351, 360, or 465, covering scientific, formal, change-focused, or grant writing. Practical experience is built into the program through either CMNS 412 (Practicum) or CMNS 430 (Project Management). To complete the major, students choose four more upper-level CMNS courses tailored to their interests, enabling them to specialize in areas such as digital media, public relations, or technical communication.
