COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology/Anthropology major at UFV is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of cultural and social systems, preparing them for careers in research, policy, community development, and more. The program requires 18 lower-level credits, including foundational courses such as ANTH 102, ANTH 202, SOC 101, and SOC 255/MACS 255, along with one elective from List 1A (Sociology) and one from List 2A (Anthropology). Students are encouraged to select courses that align with their upper-level interests. At the upper level, students complete 31–32 credits including core courses like ANTH 301 and SOC 350, one research methods course (e.g., SOC 355, SOC 356, or IPK 344), two upper-level Sociology electives from List 1B, two upper-level Anthropology electives from List 2B, and one Indigenous competency course from List 3. The elective lists offer diverse topics such as globalization, urban culture, gender, environment, media, and development. Many courses are cross-listed across disciplines, reflecting the program’s interdisciplinary nature. The program emphasizes critical thinking, cultural awareness, and practical research skills through both theoretical and applied learning. Graduates develop strong analytical, communication, and cross-cultural competencies, making them well-equipped for roles in education, social services, policy, international work, and community engagement.
