ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Tyndale University is a private interdenominational evangelical Christian university in Toronto, Ontario, serving both undergraduate and graduate students from over forty different Christian denominations. Its origins trace back to 1894 with the founding of the Toronto Bible Training School under the leadership of Elmore Harris, pastor of Walmer Road Baptist Church. Initially, classes were held at Walmer Road Church until the school moved to 110 College Street in 1898. By 1912, the name changed to Toronto Bible College (TBC), making it Canada’s first permanent Bible school and one of the earliest in North America. TBC became widely recognized in Toronto, with its graduation ceremonies attracting thousands at Massey Hall and later Varsity Stadium. In the 1940s, under President John McNicol, the college maintained a balanced stance against both modernism and ultra-fundamentalism, which broadened its evangelical appeal. In 1968, TBC merged with the London College of Bible and Missions to become Ontario Bible College (OBC), later relocating in 1976 to Ballyconnor Court in Toronto, where it established the Ontario Theological Seminary (OTS). The institution gained degree-granting authority in 1986 and accreditation in 1989. Facing financial hardship in the mid-1990s, it underwent restructuring, and in 1998 it was renamed Tyndale College and Seminary in honor of William Tyndale. Over the years, it expanded academic offerings, including a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education program. A major milestone came in 2006 when Tyndale acquired the St. Joseph’s Morrow Park campus at 3377 Bayview Avenue, completing the move by 2015. Today, Tyndale University is known for having the largest accredited seminary in Canada, with more than 700 graduate-level students. In 2020, the institution simplified its name to Tyndale University, affirming its place as a center for Christian higher education in Canada while preserving its historic mission of training leaders for ministry, teaching, and service.
