COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Materials Science at Trent University is a research-intensive graduate program designed to provide advanced interdisciplinary training in the study of materials and their properties. The program combines coursework with a major thesis, allowing students to develop both theoretical understanding and practical research expertise in areas such as nanotechnology, electronic materials, surface science, biomaterials, and materials characterization. Students begin with a core course, MTSC 6000H (0.5 credit), which introduces essential concepts, methodologies, and analytical approaches in materials science. In addition, they complete two elective courses totaling 1.0 credit, with at least one selected from MTSC 6012H, MTSC 6020H, or MTSC 6140H. Additional electives may include approved graduate-level courses or, in some cases, a fourth-year undergraduate course with approval from the supervisor and graduate program director. Before the thesis defence, students must also complete MTSC 6100H, a non-credit course that supports research preparation and professional development. The central requirement of the program is the thesis, which involves conducting original research under the supervision of a faculty advisor and a multidisciplinary committee. The thesis may focus on theoretical or experimental work and is designed to contribute new knowledge to the field. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in research, industry, and academia through a strong combination of coursework, interdisciplinary training, and independent research experience.
