COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Environmental and Life Sciences at Trent University is a research-based graduate program designed to develop advanced scientific expertise in environmental systems, life sciences, and applied research methodologies. The program emphasizes independent inquiry and the development of strong analytical and problem-solving skills through a combination of coursework and thesis research. Students are required to complete 0.5 credit in ENLS 5000H (Research Foundations), which provides essential training in research design, scientific methods, and disciplinary approaches within environmental and life sciences. In addition, students must complete 0.5 elective credit from approved ENLS graduate-level courses, allowing for specialization in areas aligned with their research interests. A central component of the program is the thesis, which involves conducting original, independent scientific research under the supervision of faculty members. The thesis process includes the development of a research question, data collection and analysis, and the preparation of a written document that contributes new knowledge to the field. Students must also successfully complete an oral defence of their thesis, demonstrating their ability to critically evaluate and communicate their research findings.
