COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Bioenvironmental Monitoring & Assessment at Trent University is a 28-month (7-term) thesis-based graduate program designed to train students in applied environmental research, monitoring, and assessment. The program emphasizes problem-driven scientific inquiry focused on understanding environmental change and developing solutions using both existing datasets and original field research. Students begin the program by completing a core online half-credit course in Year 1, choosing between BEMA 5003H or BEMA 5008H, which covers essential skills such as data analysis or sampling design. In Year 2, students complete a 1.5-credit professional placement (BEMA 5013C), gaining hands-on experience in real-world environmental settings through collaboration with government agencies, industry partners, or conservation organizations. A major component of the degree is the thesis project, which is equivalent to six half-credits and requires students to conduct independent, original research under faculty supervision. This research can involve either the analysis of existing environmental data or the collection of new field data, depending on the research focus. Overall, the program integrates academic training, applied professional experience, and advanced research to prepare graduates for careers in environmental science, conservation, policy, and related fields, as well as for further doctoral studies.
