COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in English (Public Texts) – Thesis stream at Trent University is a graduate program that explores the production, circulation, and cultural impact of texts in public and professional contexts. The program integrates literary studies with public engagement, preparing students for advanced academic research as well as careers in publishing, communications, journalism, editing, and related fields. Students complete foundational coursework beginning with ENGL 5001H: Colloquium and ENGL 5003H: Research and Professional Development Seminar, each worth 0.5 credit and designed to develop scholarly communication skills, research methodologies, and professional preparation. They also take ENGL 5007H: Public Texts, which introduces key theoretical approaches to understanding how texts function in public spheres. In addition, students complete four elective graduate-level English courses (2.0 credits total), allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests such as literary theory, media studies, cultural criticism, or digital humanities. The program culminates in a thesis project, which involves conducting original, in-depth research under faculty supervision. The thesis allows students to make a significant scholarly contribution to the field while demonstrating advanced analytical and research abilities.
