COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Sustainability Studies (Major Research Paper option) at Trent University is a graduate program designed to provide advanced interdisciplinary training in sustainability theory, research, and applied problem-solving. The program equips students with the knowledge and analytical skills needed to address complex environmental, social, and economic challenges through both academic study and practical engagement. Students are required to complete 2.5 credits of core coursework, beginning with SUST 5000Y: Perspectives on Sustainability (1.0 credit), which introduces foundational concepts and critical approaches to sustainability studies. They also complete SUST 5010H: Colloquium (0.5 credit), a pass/fail course that fosters academic discussion and professional development, and SUST 5002H: Research Methods (0.5 credit), which provides essential training in research design and methodology. The program also includes SUST 5800H: Major Research Paper (0.5 credit), where students conduct independent, supervised research on a sustainability-related topic. In addition, students complete 3 elective courses (1.5 credits) chosen from approved SUST graduate-level offerings, allowing for specialization in areas aligned with their interests. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, critical thinking, and applied research, preparing graduates for careers in government, industry, non-profit organizations, and further academic study, while enabling them to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development and policy innovation.
